Nineteen-year-old Kwena Maphaka has announced himself on the international stage with a blistering performance against Australia. The young Proteas bowler claimed a career-best 4/20, showcasing raw pace and fearless intent in a closely contested match where South Africa narrowly missed chasing down a target of 179.
Key Wickets & Impressive Pace
Maphaka's impact was immediate, securing crucial wickets including Tim David and Mitchell Owen, alongside tailenders Adam Zampa and Ben Dwarshuis. A highlight of his spell was the dismissal of Owen, with a searing 144kph delivery that sent the off-stump cartwheeling. Maphaka had cleverly anticipated Owen's leg-side shuffle, denying him the room to swing freely.
Dominating David
He proved equally challenging for Australia's in-form power-hitter, Tim David. Maphaka conceded only 14 runs in 11 deliveries to the right-hander – the best return of any South African bowler – and eventually dismissed him in the second-last over.
Fiery on the Field
Maphaka even engaged in a verbal exchange with David, a decade his senior, showcasing his competitive spirit. Teammate Ryan Rickelton described him as a "fiery character" who is "very relaxed, very quiet in the change room".
"He had a bit of a go at Tim (David) there, but he's very competitive," Rickelton said. "He backs his ability which is great. It's cool to see a young guy stand up to Australia in their backyard. It's very promising for South African cricket."
Sharp in the Field
Maphaka also shone in the field at Marrara Stadium, taking two sharp catches in the Powerplay, both off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada. His performance signals a bright future for South African cricket.
