Petrol Price Drop! Diesel Hike! Gwede Mantashe's Fuel Price Shocker!

Johannesburg - Buckle up, South Africa! Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has announced fuel price adjustments coming into effect on 6 August 2025. It's a mixed bag for motorists, with petrol prices seeing a welcome decrease, while diesel users face an increase at the pumps.

Petrol Relief, Diesel Disappointment

Petrol (both 93 and 95 octane) will see a decrease of 28c/l. However, diesel prices are going up significantly. Diesel (0.05% sulphur) will increase by 65c/l, and Diesel (0.005% sulphur) will rise by 63c/l. Illuminating paraffin (wholesale) also sees an increase of 32c/l.

As of midnight tonight, expect to pay:

  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur): R20.04
  • Diesel (0.05% sulphur): R20
  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur): R19.28
  • Diesel (0.05% sulphur): R19.17

Why the Change?

The primary driver behind these adjustments is the slight decrease in the average Brent Crude oil price, from $69.36 to $69.06 during the review period. This decrease is attributed to OPEC's decision to increase production and uncertainty surrounding potential US trade tariffs, which could impact global economic growth and, consequently, crude oil demand.

While petrol prices benefited from the crude oil price drop, diesel and paraffin prices increased due to low stock levels in the US, unplanned refinery shutdowns, and refinery closures in the EU, leading to tighter supply.

The Rand also appreciated slightly against the US dollar (from 17.84 to 17.76), contributing to the decrease in petrol prices.

What Does This Mean for You?

For petrol users, this offers a small reprieve amidst rising living costs. However, the diesel price hike will likely impact transport costs and potentially increase the price of goods and services. Keep an eye on your budget and adjust accordingly!
