Cape Town City finds itself at a crossroads as potential departures of key players Jody Ah Shene and Emile Witbooi loom large. Following the club's relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, rumours have intensified, linking the promising youngsters with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Club owner John Comitis has confirmed that City offered three young players to Sundowns in a reported multimillion-rand package. This move was part of a desperate attempt to raise funds for a PSL franchise purchase, an ambition that ultimately fell through. The proposed deal included striker Ah Shene, who recently scored for Amajita against France at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile, alongside Witbooi and Jaedin Rhodes.
Franchise Dreams Dashed, Now What?
Speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma, Comitis revealed the motivation behind the player sales approach, emphasizing the urgency to return to the Betway Premiership. "We were trying to bring funds to the club so that we can buy a franchise. Unfortunately, no one was willing to sell to us, so we had to roll up our sleeves for the long road," Comitis stated.
The club owner expressed frustration with the circumstances surrounding City's relegation, maintaining his belief that the club was unfairly treated. "We were unfortunate as a club to be where we are, and I think all things being equal, I think we were also unfortunate in the boardroom with the extra game that was played after the season ended. That wasn’t fair play, and I stick by that, and everyone knows. We were looking to regain our status, and it was a quick solution," Comitis underlined.
Ah Shene's World Cup Focus
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his club future, Ah Shene remains focused on his performances at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. His goal against France has undoubtedly raised his profile, further fueling speculation about a potential move to Sundowns. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the fate of these young talents and the future direction of Cape Town City.
