The Government of National Unity (GNU) is facing turbulence as key partners, the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), engage in a heated exchange. This follows the DA's decision to boycott the upcoming National Dialogue, a move that has sparked criticism and accusations from both sides.
Ramaphosa & Steenhuisen Trade Barbs
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has accused the DA of hypocrisy, while DA Leader John Steenhuisen has labelled Ramaphosa's comments as "intemperate." The DA's withdrawal stems from Ramaphosa's decision to remove Andrew Whitfield, a DA member, from his position as deputy minister. They also cite the lack of action against ANC ministers facing controversy as a contributing factor.
Steenhuisen argues that the National Dialogue will be futile if the Cabinet remains filled with individuals implicated in corruption and maladministration. He questions the credibility of implementing plans through people who have allegedly disregarded Parliament and the public.
ANC Dismisses DA's Concerns
Ramaphosa, however, dismisses the DA's concerns, stating that they are conflating unrelated issues. He insists that the National Dialogue will proceed regardless of the DA's participation. He emphasized the wide-ranging scope of the dialogue, encompassing cultural issues, sport, and science, suggesting the DA will miss a significant opportunity by choosing to abstain.
The ANC also believes the DA's criminal complaint against Nkabane is linked to their grievance over Whitfield's dismissal, further fueling the tensions between the two parties. The withdrawal from the National Dialogue is likely to put Steenhuisen under pressure, highlighting the growing strain within the GNU.
Political analysts suggest that the firing of Whitfield could be a calculated move by Ramaphosa, potentially aimed at appeasing certain factions within the ANC or testing the DA's commitment to the coalition. The incident may also embolden DA activists seeking a change in leadership within the party.
The future stability of the GNU remains uncertain as these disagreements escalate. The ability of the ANC and DA to resolve their differences will be crucial in maintaining a functional and effective government.
