Massive Great White Shark 'Contender' Spotted Near North Carolina Coast

A massive great white shark, nicknamed 'Contender,' has resurfaced off the coast of North Carolina, near Cape Hatteras. This impressive specimen, measuring nearly 14 feet in length and weighing over 1,650 pounds, is the largest male great white shark ever recorded in the northwest Atlantic.

Contender was first tagged by OCEARCH, a global non-profit marine research group, in January off the Florida-Georgia coast. The tag allows researchers to track his movements and gather valuable data on the lives of white sharks in the Northwest Atlantic.

OCEARCH uses Smart Position and Temperature Transmitting (SPOT) tags attached to the shark's dorsal fin. These tags transmit a signal when the fin breaks the surface, providing near-live location data to the OCEARCH shark tracker. A 'Z-ping' specifically means the shark was at the surface, but the signal was too weak for an accurate location.

Dr. Harley Newton, OCEARCH’s chief scientist and veterinarian, explained that the sharks' migration patterns bring them north during late spring and early summer, seeking warmer waters and abundant food supplies. Contender’s recent location off the Outer Banks suggests he may be feeding aggressively, building up energy reserves for the long journey ahead.

Why Track Great White Sharks?

Tracking sharks like Contender is crucial for understanding their behavior, migration patterns, and feeding habits. This data helps scientists identify critical feeding zones, document shifting habitats, and ultimately contribute to ocean conservation efforts.

A Tourist Hotspot, a Shark's Buffet?

The timing of Contender's appearance near popular tourist destinations like Pamlico Sound raises awareness. While shark attacks are rare, it is a reminder to be mindful of marine life when enjoying the ocean.

  • Respect the ocean and its inhabitants.
  • Be aware of your surroundings while swimming or kayaking.
  • Stay informed about local wildlife advisories.

OCEARCH continues to monitor Contender's movements, providing the public with a rare glimpse into the life of this 'ultimate ocean warrior.'
