Reading Shocks Portsmouth! Cup Win Dedicated to Lost Loved Ones!

Reading FC delivered a stunning performance, securing their first victory of the 2025/26 season by knocking Championship side Portsmouth out of the Carabao Cup at Fratton Park. The Royals' 2-1 win was a testament to their young squad and a much-needed boost after a challenging start to the season.

Reading Stuns Pompey in Carabao Cup

More than 1,000 loyal supporters made the trip from Berkshire, contributing to a lively atmosphere in the 14,500-strong crowd. Manager Noel Hunt made nine changes to the starting lineup, giving opportunities to academy graduates and new signings alike. The gamble paid off, as Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan and Andre Garcia put Reading ahead with well-deserved first-half goals.

While Tayo Singerr's late goal for Portsmouth created a tense finish, Reading held on to secure the win. Goalkeeper Jack Stevens, making his full debut, pulled off some crucial saves, while teenager Ashqar Ahmed impressed with his defensive awareness.

Hunt Dedicates Victory to Those Who Passed

After the match, a reflective Noel Hunt dedicated the victory to individuals connected with the club who had recently passed away. He mentioned Richard's late father, Roger, Eddie Dove, a patron of the club, and Kevin Couhig, the brother of chairman Rob.

"I’m so pleased for the boys, the club and the fans that came down," Hunt said. "There are a couple of people I need to mention because we lost a few people over the last few weeks and we’re a close-knit group. That, tonight, was for them."

Hunt also praised his team's performance, adding: "We were really good - I’m not going to try and dress it up. They’re a good [Portsmouth] side." This victory provides a platform for Reading to build on as they continue their League One campaign.
