Andile Lungisa Calls for Radical ANC Shake-Up!
Johannesburg – In a dramatic turn of events, ANC NEC member Andile Lungisa has publicly called for the disbandment of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC). This bold move comes after months of reported delays and internal turmoil within the NEC, particularly following the ANC's less-than-stellar performance in the recent 2024 elections.
According to sources, Lungisa made the call during last week's NEC meeting, suggesting that former President Thabo Mbeki should step in as convener and former ANC Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe should become the coordinator. This proposal aims to inject new leadership and direction into the struggling party.
Lungisa reportedly criticized the NEC's failure to hold timely meetings, even amidst a national budget crisis. He argued that the current NEC not only led the ANC to achieve only 40% in the last elections but also lacks concrete plans to improve its prospects in the future.
Economic Concerns and State-Owned Enterprises
Lungisa further lashed out at the ANC for its perceived lack of clear strategies to address the country's economic woes and rising unemployment. He accused the party of allowing private interests to take control of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), further exacerbating the economic challenges faced by South Africa.
Echoes of Discontent Within the NEC
Notably, some NEC members have reportedly echoed Lungisa's sentiments, expressing concerns about the NEC's lack of preparedness for the upcoming National General Council and this week’s National Dialogue. This suggests a deeper undercurrent of dissatisfaction within the party's leadership.
This call for disbandment represents a significant challenge to the ANC's current leadership and raises questions about the party's future direction. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining how the ANC responds to this internal crisis.
