KWAZULU-NATAL - KZN Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, finds himself at the centre of a swirling controversy. DA's Breytenbach Criticizes Mkhwanazi's Approach
Glynnis Breytenbach, the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Justice spokesperson, has publicly questioned Mkhwanazi's decision to address the allegations in a press briefing, especially while dressed in police combat gear. Breytenbach believes Mkhwanazi had alternative avenues, such as the portfolio committee on police, to raise his concerns within Parliament.
"He comes to the portfolio committee on police once a month. Why didn't he tell them about it? That was the appropriate space to raise it," Breytenbach stated, emphasizing the existing channels for addressing grievances within the parliamentary system.
Breytenbach also expressed concern over Mkhwanazi's choice of attire at the press conference. "To come to a press conference with people in full combat gear with automatic weapons and wearing masks, that looks like a coup loading," she remarked, highlighting the potential for misinterpretation and escalation.
Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate
Parliament has established an ad hoc committee to investigate Mkhwanazi's allegations. Breytenbach will be among the 18 MPs forming the committee, tasked with uncovering the truth behind the claims of police corruption and interference. The committee is scheduled to convene for the first time on Tuesday to elect a chairperson and commence the investigation process.
