Fly Easier! TSA's New 'Families on the Fly' Initiative Takes Off!

TSA Launches 'Families on the Fly' Initiative for Stress-Free Travel

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is rolling out a new initiative called "Families on the Fly" designed to make air travel smoother and less stressful for families. This program aims to address common logistical challenges faced by families at the airport, such as separating from children in security lines and navigating with strollers and bulky items.

Launched on July 18th by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the initiative is currently available at Orlando International Airport and Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. The TSA plans to expand the program to more airports soon, including John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.

What to Expect from 'Families on the Fly'

The 'Families on the Fly' initiative includes several key features designed to support families throughout the security process:

  • Dedicated Family Lanes: These lanes are specifically designed to accommodate families with young children, strollers, diaper bags, and other bulky items.
  • Expanded PreCheck Access: TSA is working on a new discounted rate for TSA PreCheck fees, making expedited screening more accessible for families. Currently, children 12 and under can accompany a parent or guardian with TSA PreCheck without needing their own membership.
  • Streamlined Screening Services: The program aims to streamline the screening process to minimize stress and delays for families.

“DHS and TSA are committed to making the airport security experience as smooth and stress-free as possible for traveling families,” said Adam Stahl, the senior official performing the duties of deputy TSA administrator. “The Families on the Fly campaign ... aims to mitigate the unique challenges families face when traveling and minimize stress while maintaining the highest level of security.”

TSA plans to further expand the program to airports such as Charleston International, Jacksonville International, Rhode Island T.F. Green, Luis Munoz Marin International in San Juan and Tampa International in the coming months. This initiative promises a more relaxed and efficient airport experience for families travelling in South Africa and beyond.
