PSL Drama! Cape Town City Win Big - Relegation Looms?

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is facing a potential shake-up after Cape Town City reportedly won their arbitration case against Marumo Gallants. This victory centres around the eligibility of Gallants midfielder Monde Mpambaniso, whose registration has been under scrutiny.

City approached the SAFA arbitration tribunal, claiming that Mpambaniso was improperly registered and therefore ineligible to play in 20 league matches, including 11 starts. Sources indicate that the tribunal ruled in favour of Cape Town City, potentially opening the door for significant consequences for Marumo Gallants.

What's at Stake?

If the PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) rules in favour of City, Gallants could face substantial points deductions for each match Mpambaniso participated in. This could lead to their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

"Cape Town City have won their SAFA arbitration case, and as things stand, they stand a chance of returning to topflight football," a source close to the matter told the Siya crew. "It’s a case involving Marumo Gallants player Monde Mpambaniso. City argued that he was improperly registered," the source said.

Kaizer Chiefs Could Benefit

The ramifications extend beyond Gallants. Kaizer Chiefs, who finished ninth in the league, could benefit. If Gallants forfeit enough points, Chiefs would sneak into the MTN8 tournament.

This situation highlights the importance of player registration compliance within the PSL. The outcome of the PSL DC's decision will have a significant impact on the league standings and the future of both Marumo Gallants and Kaizer Chiefs.

  • Cape Town City win arbitration case
