UMZIMKHULU - A senior Umzimkhulu municipal official has been apprehended by the political killings task team in connection with the 2017 assassination of Sindiso Magaqa, former ANC Youth League Secretary-General. This arrest marks a significant development in a case that has haunted the community for years.
Magaqa was tragically killed in a hail of bullets while travelling in a vehicle. The incident sent shockwaves through the political landscape, raising serious concerns about political violence and corruption.
The investigation has been long and complex. Sibusiso Ncengwa, the hitman, was previously sentenced to 25 years imprisonment after admitting he was paid R120,000 to carry out the murder. The recent arrest of the senior municipal official suggests that investigators are closing in on those who orchestrated the hit.
This isn't the first time officials have been linked to the case. In 2018, the 55-year-old suspect, who was a former municipal manager, was arrested along with four others, including the late Mayor of the Harry Gwala District, Mluleki Ndobe. However, charges against them were provisionally withdrawn in March 2019.
Police confirmed the suspect was re-arrested at his home in Malvern, Durban. Currently, two accused are on trial for Magaqa’s murder, while a third was sentenced earlier this month after pleading guilty. The former municipal manager is expected to appear in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
Magaqa's family has consistently demanded that the mastermind behind the murder be brought to justice. This latest arrest offers a glimmer of hope that they may finally get the closure they deserve. The case highlights the urgent need to address political violence and ensure accountability within local government.
The Fight for Justice Continues
The arrest of the senior official is a significant step, but the fight for justice is far from over. It remains crucial to uncover the full truth behind Magaqa's murder and ensure that all those involved are held accountable. The community of Umzimkhulu, and indeed the entire nation, is watching closely.
