Award-winning musician Simphiwe Dana has publicly called out actress Nomzamo Mbatha and the producers of the hit series 'Shaka iLembe' for allegedly appropriating her signature hairstyle without giving her due credit. Dana, known for her iconic tribal braids, expressed her frustration on social media, accusing Mbatha and the show of copying her style.
Both Simphiwe Dana and Nomzamo Mbatha are known for embracing tribal braids and natural hair-inspired hairstyles. While Mbatha sometimes wears wigs, she is also recognised for her natural looks. 'Shaka iLembe,' where Mbatha portrays Queen Nandi, showcases a rich heritage with natural hair styled in traditional ways that celebrate culture and pride. The show's Head of Hair and Makeup Design, Queen Motlatle, has been praised for creating authentic historical looks.
However, Dana feels that she deserves recognition for popularizing these styles, especially among celebrities. She claims that her unique take on tribal hairstyles has become a trademark and a part of her brand. While acknowledging that these hairstyles have been around for decades, Dana believes that 'Shaka iLembe' and Mbatha should acknowledge her influence.
"I’m now fed up with brand appropriating my style. The least you can do is acknowledge where you got the ideas from. I’m talking to you Shaka iLembe and Nomzamo Mbatha," Dana stated. She further emphasized the need for appreciation rather than appropriation.
The controversy has sparked debate on social media, with some users supporting Dana's claims and others defending Mbatha and 'Shaka iLembe,' arguing that tribal hairstyles are a part of African culture and cannot be exclusively claimed by any individual.
The Debate Continues
The conversation around cultural appropriation and acknowledgement continues to evolve. This incident highlights the complexities of artistic inspiration and the importance of giving credit where it's due.
