Emma Powell Steps Down as DA International Relations Spokesperson
In a surprising turn of events, Emma Powell has resigned from her position as the Democratic Alliance's (DA) international relations spokesperson. The announcement, made via her X account, cites harassment, threats, and intimidation as contributing factors to her decision.
This resignation comes on the heels of allegations that Powell was being spied on by the State Security Agency (SSA), adding another layer of intrigue to the situation. Known for her outspoken criticism of the African National Congress (ANC) regarding foreign policy, Powell has often found herself at odds with the ruling party.
Clashes with the ANC
Powell recently drew criticism for claiming that President Cyril Ramaphosa's special envoy, Mcebisi Jonas, was denied a visa to the United States. Her international trips, viewed by the ANC as undermining the country's foreign policy, have also been a source of contention. One such trip to the US in March led to the dismissal of her colleague, Andrew Whitfield, as a deputy minister. A subsequent sponsored trip to Israel in April further fueled the controversy.
In her statement, Powell acknowledged the complexities of the newly formed Government of National Unity (GNU), suggesting that she has achieved what she could under the current circumstances. She stated, "Driven by my commitment to the DA’s foundational principles, I accepted these risks as the unavoidable cost of standing up to and exposing the Department of International Relations and the ANC’s relationships with authoritarian regimes.”
Looking Ahead
Powell, who has been a DA Member of Parliament (MP) since 2019, expressed gratitude to the DA for allowing her to represent the party internationally for the past two and a half years. She will retain her seat in Parliament, focusing on empowering others, especially women, to take on leadership roles.
The DA has announced that Ryan Smith, Powell's former deputy, will assume the role of spokesperson for international relations. DA chief whip George Michalakis thanked Powell for her service and indicated that she will be assigned a new portfolio soon.
