Jol! Extreme Weather Alert for Twin Cities! Prepare for Heat & Storms!

Eish, South Africa! The Twin Cities are facing a double whammy of extreme weather. Get ready for scorching heat and potentially severe storms! Sunday is a NEXT Weather Alert day for both reasons, so listen up and stay safe.

Flash Flood Warnings in Effect

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Ramsey County and central Washington County, lasting until 12:30 a.m. Monday. Stevens County is also under a similar warning until 10 p.m. So, avoid low-lying areas and be careful on the roads.

Storms Cause Havoc

Roseville Police reported that about three vehicles were stranded due to flooding and needed towing. The Roseville Fire Department even had to escort someone from a vehicle. Luckily, no one was injured.

Severe Weather Outlook

Parts of central and southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, are at an enhanced risk (3 out of 5) for severe weather from evening into the overnight hours on Sunday. The rest of Minnesota and western Wisconsin have a slight (2 out of 5) or marginal (1 out of 5) risk.

The biggest threats are damaging winds and hail, but tornadoes are also possible. A tornado has already touched down near Appleton in west-central Minnesota, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Safety Tips During a Tornado

  • If you're at home, head to the basement or an interior room, away from windows.
  • If you're outside or driving, seek indoor shelter if possible. If not, find a low-lying ditch.
  • Sheds and storage facilities are NOT safe shelters during a tornado.

After the Storm

  • Stay weather-informed.
  • Contact family through texting and social media.
  • Assess damage and report downed power lines.
  • Stay out of damaged buildings.
  • Help your neighbours until first aid arrives.

Power Outages

Just before 10 p.m. Monday, Xcel Energy reported that electric outages affected around 74,000 customers across Minnesota, with most in the Twin Cities metro. Crews are working hard to restore power, but remember to stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.

Heat is On!

Expect hazy sunshine, hot temperatures, and high humidity today in the Twin Cities. Highs will be in the low 90s with heat index values reaching 100 to 103 degrees. Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.

More Storms on the Way

Strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, hail, and heavy rainfall are possible in the Twin Cities between 9 p.m. tonight and 3 a.m. Monday. Severe thunderstorms with a tornado threat will also develop from the Duluth area westward. Stay tuned for updates!
