Saints Draw! Pre-Season Action in Spain – All the Highlights!

Southampton Football Club kicked off their pre-season tour in Spain with a 1-1 draw against CD Castellón of the Spanish Segunda División. The match, played in Girona, saw Ben Brereton Diaz force an own goal in the first half, giving Saints the lead. However, Kenneth Mamah equalised for the Spanish side in the second half.

Key Moments from the Match

While it ended in a draw, the match provided a good workout for Will Still's squad. Despite Southampton's attacking efforts, the Castellón goalkeeper wasn't forced into a single save throughout the game. Meanwhile, Saints' goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was kept busy, making several crucial saves.

  • James Bree struck the post with a powerful free-kick.
  • Bazunu made a brilliant stop with his foot to deny a header.
  • Mateus Fernandes made his first appearance of the summer, playing just over 30 minutes.
  • Ronnie Edwards played the first half at right-back.

Injury Updates and Squad News

Several key players missed the trip due to injuries, including Kuryu Matsuki, Flynn Downes, Tyler Dibling, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis. Jan Bednarek and Armel Bella-Kotchap were also not selected for the tour. New signing Damion Downs warmed up with the squad but didn't feature in the match.

Saints fans can purchase match passes for their remaining friendly against RCD Espanyol for £5. However, due to broadcast rights, the Espanyol fixture is only available to users in the UK.
