Nkabane Fired! Parties Celebrate, But Is It Enough to Fix SA?

Political parties across South Africa are applauding President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to dismiss Nobuhle Nkabane from her position as Minister of Higher Education and Training. The move follows months of controversy surrounding Nkabane's appointment of the Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) board, which was ultimately withdrawn due to public outcry.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been particularly vocal, claiming credit for the dismissal, citing their “relentless pressure to fight corruption, wrongdoing and criminality.” DA MP Karabo Khakhau urged President Ramaphosa to take action against other ANC members accused of corruption, stating that Nkabane's removal is just the first step.

“One Nkabane does not a renewed ANC make. There is a very long list of ANC corruption to be eradicated,” Khakhau declared.

The MK party echoed these sentiments, calling the dismissal “necessary and long overdue.” They criticized Nkabane’s failure to account for the irregular allocation of Seta board positions, raising concerns about transparency and political interference.

Buti Manamela has been appointed as Nkabane’s replacement, with Nomusa Dube-Ncube taking on the role of deputy minister. The question now is whether these changes will be enough to address the systemic issues of corruption and mismanagement within the higher education and training sector.

The public remains skeptical, demanding concrete action and accountability from the government. While Nkabane's dismissal is seen as a positive step, many believe it is merely scratching the surface of a much deeper problem. The pressure is now on President Ramaphosa to demonstrate a genuine commitment to rooting out corruption and restoring public trust.

What's Next for Higher Education in SA?

With a new minister at the helm, the higher education sector is facing a critical juncture. Key challenges include addressing funding shortages, improving the quality of education, and ensuring equitable access for all South Africans. Manamela will need to act swiftly to restore confidence and implement effective policies that benefit students and the nation as a whole.

The Role of SETAs Going Forward

The controversy surrounding the Seta board appointments has highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in the selection process. Ensuring that these boards are comprised of qualified and ethical individuals is crucial for the effective functioning of the sector and the proper allocation of resources.
