FlySafair Pilots Strike! Will Your Flight Take Off? Get the Latest!

FlySafair Faces Pilot Strike Action: What Travellers Need to Know

Tensions are soaring at FlySafair as pilots, largely represented by the Solidarity union, prepare for a two-week strike over a wage dispute. Originally planned as a one-day action, the strike has been extended following FlySafair's announcement of a seven-day lockout of its pilots.

The core issue revolves around a rejected 5.7% wage increase, deemed insufficient by the pilots. Solidarity spokesperson, Helgard Cronje, stated that the extended strike action is a direct response to the airline's lockout decision.

FlySafair's Response and Contingency Plans

FlySafair has issued a strong warning to pilots, stating that participation in the strike will come at a cost. The airline is keen to reassure passengers that flights will continue despite the escalating tensions. They maintain they have contingency plans in place, including rescheduling flights, redistributing crews, and utilising management pilots to minimise disruption.

The airline also highlights its flexible rostering system, which allows them to operate seven days a week with different pilots scheduled across flights. This, they say, provides a "certain degree of grace" to maintain flight schedules even with some pilots on strike.

What This Means for Passengers

While FlySafair insists it can maintain its schedule, passengers should be prepared for potential disruptions. Some customers may need to make alternative travel arrangements. FlySafair has stated that any pilot refusing to work will not be paid for the missed days, but they do not anticipate full participation in the strike from all unionised crew.

Underlying Concerns: Rostering System and Working Conditions

Beyond the wage dispute, pilots have raised concerns regarding a new rostering system. They claim it cuts into their rest time and leave, impacting their overall working conditions. Solidarity has urged FlySafair to prioritise fixing these working conditions alongside the wage issue.

FlySafair maintains that its current pay offer and rostering changes are fair, sustainable, and aligned with industry practice, expressing hope that the issues can still be resolved through ongoing dialogue.
