SASSA Intensifies Eligibility Checks
SASSA is now conducting stricter digital reviews and automated cross-checks with other government databases to identify beneficiaries who may no longer qualify for grants. These monthly checks are standard, and stricter means and asset tests are being enforced.
According to SASSA CEO Themba Matlou, speaking at a media briefing, the agency found approximately 210,000 beneficiaries in June who failed to report additional sources of income. This is a violation of the Social Assistance Act, which requires recipients to notify SASSA of any changes to their financial situation.
What Happens If You Don't Disclose Income?
Failure to report additional income can lead to grant suspension or permanent termination. SASSA is actively using automated cross-checks with government databases to verify eligibility in real-time. Beneficiaries must ensure they meet the eligibility thresholds released in April 2025.
SASSA Eligibility Thresholds (Effective 1 April 2025)
Assets Threshold:
- Older persons, disability, and war veterans grants
- Single applicant: R1,524,60
Addressing Payment Delays and Improving Service
SASSA is aware of frustrations regarding payment delays. They are taking steps to improve service, including extending operating hours and hiring more staff to manage long queues. This aims to assist beneficiaries who are undergoing in-person reviews to verify their details.
If you have been flagged for undisclosed income, it's crucial to verify your details with SASSA. Failure to do so within three months could result in your grant lapsing. Don't delay – ensure your information is up-to-date to continue receiving your SASSA grant payments.
