The South African Police Service (SAPS) is scrambling to address claims circulating on social media linking an associate of Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala to the Kuruman Police Station. This comes after Matlala's name surfaced in connection with high-profile politicians during a recent press conference by KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, sparking national interest and concern.
The controversial social media post alleges that Kenny Hlayiseka Baloyi, the current director of Matlala's Medicare 24 company, which was initially awarded a R360 million tender (later cancelled), holds an official position within the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. These allegations have prompted a swift response from law enforcement.
Internal Investigation Launched
Provincial Police Spokesperson, Mashay Gamieldien, stated that the Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, has initiated an internal investigation into these claims. The SAPS is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, recognizing the potential damage such allegations can inflict on public trust.
SAPS Urges Caution
Gamieldien issued a strong plea to the public, urging them to refrain from sharing unverified or incorrect information on social media. "The police are making an urgent plea to the public to refrain from posting unverified or incorrect information on social media platforms without verification as it portrays negatively on the organization and implicated persons involved," Gamieldien explained.
The SAPS is determined to address these allegations transparently and maintain the integrity of the police force. The outcome of the internal investigation is eagerly awaited, as it will shed light on the validity of the claims and determine any necessary course of action. This incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating misinformation and maintaining public confidence in the digital age.
