Western Cape Weather Alert: Brace Yourselves!
Cape Town is preparing for another onslaught of cold, wet, and windy weather! The City of Cape Town has announced its readiness to coordinate relief efforts as severe weather conditions are expected to batter the region. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall across parts of the Western Cape from today, Thursday, through Sunday.
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains could lead to localised flooding and potential property damage. This warning comes as the province is still recovering from last week's heavy downpours, which submerged several informal settlements across the Western Cape.
Snow on the Way? Drakensberg and Gauteng Could See Freezing Conditions
But the bad weather isn't just limited to the Western Cape. SAWS has also warned of a significant drop in temperatures across the central interior. This could bring rain and showers to parts of the Free State, Eastern Cape, North West, and of course, the Western Cape.
Freezing levels are expected to plummet by Friday, potentially leading to snowfall in the Drakensberg mountains and even sleet over southern parts of Gauteng. Lehlohonolo Thobela, a weather forecaster at SAWS, indicated a significant chance of showers and rain across various regions, with a higher probability along the southwest coast of the Western Cape.
Damaging winds are also a concern, particularly in the central and southern parts of the Northern Cape. These winds could cause minor damage to settlements, disrupt transport and travel services, and even lead to falling trees.
What to Expect:
- Western Cape: High chance of showers and rain, especially along the southwest coast. Potential for localised flooding.
- Drakensberg: Possible snowfall.
- Gauteng (Southern): Possible sleet.
- Northern Cape: Damaging winds.
- Eastern Cape: Cold conditions in high-lying areas.
Stay safe, South Africa! Keep an eye on weather updates and take necessary precautions.
