SA Engineers HOME! Freed After 2 Years in Equatorial Guinea Jail!

Frik Potgieter and Peter Huxham, two South African engineers, are finally home after enduring over two years of imprisonment in Equatorial Guinea. Their ordeal, which began in February 2023, concluded with a presidential pardon following relentless efforts by their families and the South African government.

The UN had previously labelled their detention as "arbitrary and illegal," adding weight to the claims that the charges against them were dubious. Potgieter and Huxham, both in their mid-50s, were initially arrested after drugs were allegedly discovered in their luggage. They were subsequently sentenced to 12 years in prison and slapped with a hefty $5 million fine.

The circumstances surrounding their arrest are particularly noteworthy. It occurred just days after luxury assets belonging to Equatorial Guinea’s Vice-President, Teodoro Nguema Obiang, were seized in South Africa. These assets included a yacht and two Cape Town villas, impounded as a result of a court ruling. This timing fueled speculation that the engineers' arrest was an act of retaliation.

"We are overwhelmed with relief and joy. The last two years and four months have been unimaginably painful for both of our families," expressed the families in a released statement. They had been working for the Dutch oil and gas company SBM in Equatorial Guinea when they were arrested on the eve of their return home after a five-week work period.

The families actively sought assistance from both the South African and UK governments, given that Mr. Huxham holds dual nationality. South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola expressed gratitude towards the Government of Equatorial Guinea for granting the presidential pardon, allowing the men to return to their families.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention added its voice to the calls for their release last year, asserting the unlawfulness of their detention. This case highlights the complexities of international relations and the importance of diplomatic intervention in safeguarding the rights of citizens abroad.
