Big news for South African motorsport! The FIA has given the green light to plans upgrading the iconic Kyalami circuit to Grade 1 status. This is a major step towards bringing Formula 1 back to South Africa for the first time since 1993.
Kyalami: A History of Speed
Kyalami has a rich history of hosting F1 Grand Prix events, from 1967 to 1985, and again in 1992 and 1993. The circuit has undergone significant changes since then, including a major renovation in 2016 to achieve Grade 2 status. Now, the approved upgrade plans aim to meet the FIA's demanding Grade 1 certification requirements.
What's the Upgrade About?
According to Apex Circuit Design, the UK-based company behind the upgrade (also responsible for the Miami F1 street circuit), the plans won't involve altering the circuit layout. Instead, the focus will be on enhancing run-off areas, barrier and debris fencing, kerbs, and drainage. It's a 'light-touch upgrade' focused on meeting modern safety standards.
"A Defining Moment"
Toby Venter, the owner of Kyalami circuit, sees this as a crucial moment. "This is a defining moment for South African motorsport," he stated. "When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we committed to restoring it, not just as a world-class venue, but as a beacon for motorsport across the African continent. The FIA's acceptance of our Grade 1 design is a major step forward."
Next Steps
Kyalami now has three years to complete the planned Grade 1 upgrades. The official release emphasizes that these works are contingent on South Africa securing a place on the F1 calendar and Kyalami being chosen as the preferred venue.
This is a very exciting time for South African motorsport fans! Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
