WhatsApp: Ditch Your Number! New Usernames Coming to SA - Jacaranda FM

Jacaranda FM is buzzing with the news: WhatsApp is potentially rolling out a long-awaited feature - usernames! For years, the messaging app has relied on your phone number for registration and login. But that could soon change, bringing a new level of privacy to South African users.

Why Usernames? More Privacy, Less Sharing

Imagine chatting in group chats or connecting with someone new without revealing your personal phone number. That's the promise of usernames. According to reports, the feature allows you to create a unique personal handle, much like Telegram or Instagram. This handle could be a combination of letters, numbers, dots, and underscores.

Username Rules: Keeping it Clean and Secure

To maintain a secure environment, WhatsApp is implementing some guidelines for usernames:

  • Must contain at least one letter
  • Must be between 3 and 30 characters
  • Only lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods, and underscores allowed
  • Domain names (e.g., .com) are prohibited
  • Cannot start or end with a period or contain consecutive periods
  • Cannot begin with "www."

How to Create a WhatsApp Account Now (Without Facebook or Instagram)

While the username feature is on its way, you can still easily create a WhatsApp account without needing Facebook or Instagram. Simply download the app, enter your working phone number, and verify the unique six-digit code sent to you. That's it! You're ready to chat.
