Tensions in the Middle East are escalating, and the United States is reportedly bolstering its presence in Europe. Over the past three days, at least 30 US military aircraft have been relocated from bases in America to Europe, according to flight tracking data reviewed by BBC Verify. This move comes amid heightened speculation of a potential attack involving Iran, particularly following recent exchanges of strikes with Israel.
Refueling Tankers Deployed
The aircraft involved are primarily US military tanker aircraft, specifically designed for refueling fighter jets and bombers mid-air. Flightradar24 data indicates that at least seven of these tankers, all KC-135s, made stopovers at US airbases in Spain, Scotland, and England. Their subsequent routes showed them flying east of Sicily, with one landing on the Greek island of Crete.
Connection to Iran Conflict Uncertain
While the exact connection between these movements and the ongoing conflict remains unclear, experts suggest the deployments are significant. Justin Bronk, a senior analyst at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi), described the tanker aircraft flights as "highly unusual." He believes the US is implementing contingency plans to support potential intensive combat operations in the region in the coming weeks.
Strategic Ambiguity?
Vice-Admiral Mark Mellett, former head of Irish Defence Forces, suggests the movements could be part of a broader strategy of "strategic ambiguity." This approach may be intended to influence Iran to make concessions in nuclear program talks. These developments coincide with reports of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier being moved from the South China Sea towards the Middle East.
Heightened Alert
The increase in military activity follows an Israeli operation, launched on Friday, aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear program, according to reports. This operation happened a day after President Donald Trump's deadline for Iran to agree to a deal suspending its nuclear program expired. The deployment of US military aircraft and naval assets to the region underscores the increasing tensions and the potential for further escalation.
