Embrose Papier, once hailed as South Africa's next scrumhalf sensation, faces a golden opportunity to reignite his Springbok ambitions in the URC final against Leinster. As Mark Keohane writes for TimesLIVE, Saturday's showdown in Dublin presents Papier with the ideal stage to force his way back into Rassie Erasmus's consideration, seven years after his last Test cap.
Papier will be a key figure for the Bulls at Croke Park, taking on a formidable Leinster side brimming with Irish internationals and strengthened by the presence of RG Snyman and Jordie Barrett. While Leinster are the favourites, Keohane points out that the Bulls have emerged victorious in three of their last five encounters, with Papier playing a pivotal role in last week's semi-final triumph over the Sharks.
"Papier broke the game open early on, setting up winger Sebastian de Klerk and was electric for much of the match," Keohane notes. "A big day in Dublin could see him added to the Bok mix and leapfrog those selected."
Papier has been in exceptional form this season, starting 16 out of 18 URC matches. His statistics speak volumes: 18 defenders beaten, seven clean breaks, seven offloads, and an impressive 138 kicks covering over 3600 metres. Furthermore, he has only conceded four penalties, showcasing his discipline and control.
Keohane argues that another standout performance in the final could bring things full circle for the 28-year-old. First selected by Erasmus in 2018, Papier has remained loyal to the Bulls, a province he embraced after moving from Darling to Pretoria at the age of 15.
Can Papier seize the moment?
The URC final is more than just a club game for Embrose Papier. It's a chance to prove he has the skill and determination to once again wear the green and gold. His performance against Leinster will be closely watched by Springbok selectors and could very well determine his future in international rugby. South African rugby fans will be hoping he can deliver another electrifying performance and remind everyone why he was once considered one of the most promising talents in the country.
