The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has unexpectedly replaced its president, Vuyolwethu Zungula, sparking controversy and allegations of an internal power struggle. Party insiders claim that Zungula's growing popularity within the party led to his removal, as some members felt threatened by his rising influence.
On Monday, the ATM announced that Caesar Nongqunga, the party's founder, would be taking over the presidential role. The stated goal was to broaden the party's support base in anticipation of the 2026 and 2029 elections. However, sources within the ATM are dismissing this narrative as misleading.
In the recent May 2024 elections, the ATM garnered 0.40% of the vote, securing two seats in Parliament. This represented a slight decrease from the 0.44% they achieved in the 2019 general elections. According to a source, a faction within the ATM actively opposed Zungula's leadership, expressing concern that he was becoming "too prominent."
"This is the only explanation that makes sense; it's about power dynamics, nothing else," the source stated, highlighting the internal tensions within the party.
The source also revealed that Zungula was allegedly not informed beforehand about the decision to remove him as president, explaining his silence in response to media inquiries. Another source described the decision as "bizarre" and illogical, adding that Zungula's silence stems from his disciplined nature and preference to avoid public commentary on internal party matters.
"This other faction is waiting for him to make a mistake – any mistake – and they could even try to remove him from parliament. So, for now, we must lay low until things settle," one source warned.
Reportedly, the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) reached an agreement to remove Zungula from his position last Friday and subsequently dispatched a delegation to inform him of the decision. Zungula, despite being a member of the NEC, was not present when the decision was made.
Future of the ATM Under Scrutiny
The sudden change in leadership raises questions about the future direction of the ATM and its ability to consolidate its support base. The internal strife could potentially impact the party's performance in upcoming elections.
Key Questions Remain
- Will Zungula challenge his removal from the presidency?
- How will the power struggle affect party unity?
- Can the ATM effectively broaden its support base with a new leader?
