Sundowns' Continental Ambitions: Preparing for the Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns, South Africa's football powerhouse, have their sights set firmly on continental dominance, not just local league success. As they gear up for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, The Athletic gained exclusive access to the team's inner workings, revealing their ambitious plans and state-of-the-art preparations.

Fortress Chloorkop: Where Ambition Takes Root

Nestled just outside Johannesburg, in Chloorkop, Sundowns' training ground is a fortress of yellow stone walls. Inside, two villas house the football operations and administration, creating an environment where players seemingly have everything they need. Sporting director Flemming Berg emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement, particularly regarding the training pitches. "The faster you can play, the more you can dominate," he explains. "And to play fast, you need good pitches."

Motsepe's Vision: Investing in Talent and Infrastructure

Since Patrice Motsepe's acquisition of Sundowns in 2003, the club has benefited from significant investment in both talent and infrastructure. Berg believes that Sundowns' facilities are now comparable to some of the most progressive clubs in Europe, a testament to Motsepe's commitment to excellence.

Berg's Role: Connecting the Dots

Flemming Berg, who joined Sundowns from the Danish Football Association, plays a crucial role in the club's structure. As sporting director, he sees his job as "connecting the dots," overseeing seven departments and reporting directly to Tlhopie Motsepe, the chairman of the board. The system is inspired by what Berg considers to be the best practices in European football. Sundowns are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for continental glory.

The team's journey to the Club World Cup is a testament to their ambition and dedication. It will be exciting to see how they perform on the world stage.
