Alexander Zverev has responded to criticism from German tennis commentators Boris Becker and Barbara Rittner following his quarter-final exit at the French Open. Zverev, the world number three, saw his hopes of a first Grand Slam title dashed by Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros.
Becker and Rittner analysed Zverev's performance on German television, focusing on his coaching situation. Both suggested that Zverev should consider moving away from his father, Alexander Sr, and brother Mischa, who are currently part of his coaching team.
“At some point you need new noises and a new environment. It’s the same in football, as a football coach you don’t normally stay with a club for 10 years,” Becker commented.
Zverev countered these claims, stating that when he performs well, he is perceived to be doing everything right. Conversely, when he struggles, others become critical. He emphasized that the decision regarding his coaching team ultimately rests with him.
Patrick McEnroe also weighed in, expressing surprise at what he deemed a 'terrible' decision by Zverev against Djokovic. McEnroe noted that Zverev, despite taking an early lead, failed to adapt to Djokovic's tactics, particularly the effective use of the drop shot.
McEnroe stated: 'Quite frankly I was a little bit surprised by how Zverev went away in the second and third set, especially in the third.'
Zverev is now preparing for the Stuttgart Open, as he begins his grass-court season in preparation for Wimbledon.
Zverev's Wimbledon Prep
The Stuttgart Open will provide Zverev with an opportunity to fine-tune his game on grass. His performance there will be closely watched as he aims to improve his chances at Wimbledon.
Djokovic's Brilliance
Both Becker and McEnroe acknowledged Djokovic's exceptional performance. Djokovic's ability to adapt and his unwavering will to win were key factors in his victory over Zverev.
