Comrades Marathon Runner Recovering After Going Missing
A Comrades Marathon runner, Moira Harding, who went missing after the race, is currently recovering in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Harding was discovered near the National Sea and Rescue Building at the Point in Durban on Monday morning. She was found unresponsive and suffering from hypothermia.
Her sister, Fiona Baldwin, has spoken out about the chaotic and poorly controlled finish of the race. Baldwin believes that the race's ending in a street, rather than its usual stadium location, contributed to her sister's disappearance. She expressed that if the race had concluded at its regular venue, Harding would likely not have gone missing.
Andre Blom, Harding's Fish Hoek Athletic Club Manager, highlighted the importance of emergency identification. Harding was wearing an ID bracelet, also known as an ICE (In Case of Emergency) bracelet, which contained her emergency contact details. This allowed rescuers to quickly contact her husband once she was found.
"She was wearing an ID bracelet; they call it an ICE bracelet in case of emergencies. It's a rubber band which has a tag in it, and on that tag, you would then put in emergency contact details. So if any person finds you, they can immediately phone that tag number, and then they will then be able to get into contact the emergency contact for that person. That is how they found her husband," Blom explained.
While the club had a designated meeting point, Harding had planned to meet her sister independently after the race. The incident underscores the importance of clear race organization and readily available emergency contact information for all participants.
