Missing Comrades Runner Found Critical in Durban After Marathon

DURBAN - Relief swept through the Comrades Marathon community as Moira Harding, the runner reported missing after Sunday's race, was found in a critical condition on Mahatma Gandhi Road. A massive search operation, involving Metro Police Search & Rescue, paramedics, and the SAPS, culminated in the discovery early Monday morning.

Harding, representing Fish Hoek Athletic Club, had successfully completed the grueling ultramarathon, clocking in under 11 hours according to the Comrades live tracker app. However, she went missing shortly after finishing, prompting widespread appeals for assistance on social media.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson detailed the extensive search that led to Harding's discovery. "She was found in a critical state and was transported to hospital by helicopter. Advanced life support paramedics, SAPS, Metro Police Search and Rescue were all on scene near the NSRI base at the end of Mahatma Gandhi Road (Point Road)," Jamieson stated.

Sean Baldwin, Harding's brother-in-law, expressed the family's immense relief. "She was found near the port and we are waiting at the hospital," he confirmed, adding that they were incredibly grateful she had been found safe, albeit in a critical condition.

Harding, originally from Durban but now residing in Cape Town, participated in the Comrades Marathon alongside her sister, Fiona. The sisters ran together for the majority of the route. They parted ways around the 70km or 80km mark, with Fiona finishing approximately 20 minutes ahead. Reports indicated Harding was last seen in the runners' pen.

A missing person's case had been officially opened at the Durban Central police station. Details surrounding the circumstances of her disappearance and the cause of her critical condition remain unclear at this time, and investigations are ongoing. We will provide updates as they become available.

The Comrades Marathon community is united in sending their thoughts and prayers to Moira Harding and her family during this difficult time.
