Julius Malema's Firearm Case Adjourned: A Recap
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema appeared in the East London Magistrate's Court regarding a firearm case dating back to 2018. The court proceeding, held on Monday, saw the case adjourned until Tuesday, September 30, 2025, to allow sufficient time for judgment delivery.
Malema and his bodyguard face charges related to allegedly contravening the Firearms Control Act. They are accused of unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition during the EFF's 5th Anniversary celebration in 2018.
The judge presiding over the case stated, "I have tried to read as fast as humanly possible, but the time has gone, so the matter will continue tomorrow. I am confident that enough time will be there for judgment to continue for 30 September." Both Malema and his bodyguard remain on bail, which has been extended until the case resumes.
Before the court proceedings commenced, a significant number of EFF officials from national, provincial, and regional leadership levels were present to show their support. The EFF, via their X (formerly Twitter) handle, conveyed a message of resilience, stating, "We must never be discouraged; you must never be tired because victory is certain."
The incident that led to Malema and his bodyguard facing these charges occurred in July 2018 during the EFF's 5th-anniversary celebrations at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape. A video allegedly captured Malema discharging a firearm during the rally.
Looking Ahead
- The case is set to resume on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
- Judgment is expected to be delivered at that time.
- The outcome of this case could have significant implications for Malema and the EFF.
