NMU President: Who Will Lead Northern Michigan University?

NMU Presidential Search: Four Candidates to Visit Campus

Marquette, Michigan – The search for the next president of Northern Michigan University (NMU) is entering its final stages. After a comprehensive search that began last April, the Presidential Search Advisory Committee (PSAC) has narrowed down a pool of 84 candidates to four finalists. These candidates will visit the NMU campus between September 29th and October 10th to engage with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Each candidate will spend two days on campus, participating in a variety of activities designed to allow stakeholders to learn more about their vision for NMU's future. A key part of these visits will be community receptions, open to the public, where attendees can meet the candidates and share their perspectives.

Community Receptions: Don't Miss Your Chance to Participate

The community receptions are scheduled as follows, all taking place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.:

  • September 29th: NMU Northern Center, Ballroom IV
  • October 2nd: NMU Northern Center, Ballroom IV
  • October 6th: NMU Northern Center, Ballroom IV
  • October 9th: NMU Northern Center, Founders Room

Derek Hall, NMU Spokesperson, emphasized the importance of community input, stating, "The president of any university, and here in Marquette at Northern Michigan University, is a big part of the community, and we really value the insights and, you know, the ideas of our community. We have a strong, strong connection and we want to maintain that."

The Selection Process: A Collaborative Effort

Tami Seavoy, former trustee and chair of the PSAC, highlighted the collaborative nature of the search process. "At the beginning of this process last spring, the campus community provided valuable input for the job description of the next president of NMU," she said. "Our search firm, Parker Executive Search, identified 84 potential candidates... After those interviews, the committee reached consensus on the four most qualified candidates to bring to campus."

Rick Mengyan, president of the NMU-AAUP/AFT faculty union and search committee member, added, "The process ultimately worked really well. These four finalists are all very competitive. I am looking forward to the upcoming visits."

Names and resumes of each candidate will be released 24 hours before their campus visit. The Board of Trustees aims to appoint the 18th president of NMU by early next year.
