Taxi War Chaos! Court to Decide on Cape Town Route Closures!

The Western Cape High Court is set to hear Codeta's challenge against the Mobility Department's decision to close ten taxi routes for 30 days. This drastic measure was implemented following a violent conflict between Codeta and Cata over routes connecting Mfuleni and Khayelitsha to Somerset West, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least ten taxi operators and commuters, with several others wounded.

The Western Cape Department of Mobility is closely monitoring the six closed taxi routes in the Somerset West area, specifically between Mfuleni, Somerset West, Khayelitsha, Nomzamo, and Lwandle. According to Department Spokesperson Muneera Allie, there have been no reported incidents of violence in the past week. To accommodate the increased number of commuters affected by the closures, additional buses have been deployed on these routes.

The Western Cape Mobility Department is actively encouraging CATA and CODETA to resume negotiations in an effort to resolve their ongoing dispute. As the 30-day shutdown of taxi routes from Mfuleni and Khayelitsha to Somerset West reaches its ninth day, the situation remains tense. Codeta's legal challenge against the route closures is scheduled to be heard in the High Court today.

Provincial Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku expressed his gratitude to commuters for their patience during this disruptive period. He stated, "As we enter day 9 of the 30-day route and lane closures and following a midweek public holiday, I am pleased to report that the situation on the affected routes and lanes remains calm, as per our monitoring systems. Law enforcement agencies remain deployed to ensure the enforcement of measures."

Impact on Commuters

The closure of these vital taxi routes has significantly impacted daily commutes, forcing many to seek alternative transportation. The increased bus services are attempting to alleviate some of the pressure, but the situation remains challenging for residents in the affected areas.

Looking Ahead

The outcome of Codeta's court challenge will be crucial in determining the future of these taxi routes and the ongoing conflict between CATA and CODETA. A peaceful resolution is essential to ensure the safety and convenience of commuters in the Western Cape.
