A FlySafair flight from Durban to Johannesburg turned tragic on Sunday when a passenger passed away shortly before landing at OR Tambo International Airport. The incident occurred on flight FA417, which had departed from King Shaka International Airport.
According to reports, the passenger suffered a severe medical emergency mid-flight. The cabin crew, trained in emergency procedures, immediately administered CPR and used the onboard defibrillator. Several medical professionals who were passengers on the flight also assisted in the efforts to revive him.
Despite their combined efforts, the passenger was pronounced dead shortly before the plane landed. Emergency services were on standby upon arrival, and the deceased's body was handed over to authorities for further procedures.
FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon expressed the airline's deep sorrow and confirmed that the passenger had been medically cleared to fly prior to takeoff. The airline has offered professional counselling services to both passengers and crew who were affected by the distressing incident.
"We recognise that this was distressing for our customers and crew, and we are offering professional counselling services as part of our support," Gordon stated.
FlySafair is also conducting an internal review of the incident to examine how its protocols can be strengthened. The airline acknowledged that staff had concerns about the passenger’s condition before departure but were reassured by the medical assessment at King Shaka International Airport.
