KRC Genk are facing a tough time, both in the Europa League and domestically. After eight league games, they've only managed to scrape together eight points, marking a low point this century. It's been 32 years since they've seen such poor results.
What's Gone Wrong at Genk?
The pressure is mounting on the players and manager Thorsten Fink. Dimitri De Condé has made it clear that a turning point is needed, and preferably against Rangers in their Europa League clash.
Former player Steven Defour has weighed in on the situation, identifying a key issue. “The transition,” Defour stated on PlaySports before the Rangers match. “There are too few people who are thinking about defending.”
Defensive Woes and Lack of Quality
Defour elaborated, pointing out the vulnerability when Genk loses possession. He highlighted the high positioning of players like El Ouahdi and Kayembé, leaving Sadick and Smets exposed and facing impossible tasks.
Bob Peeters echoed these concerns, adding that there's a lack of quality upfront. He noted the absence of a player like Tolu Arokodare, who could hold the ball up effectively. Peeters also mentioned the exposed right flank against Union, emphasizing the need for Genk to “build in some safety.” This is a crucial area they must address to turn their season around.
- Poor defensive transitions
- Lack of defensive awareness from attacking players
- Reduced quality in forward positions
- Vulnerability on the flanks
Can Genk address these issues and turn their season around? Only time will tell, but the pressure is definitely on.
