Liverpool Football Club is in mourning following the sudden passing of former LFC Women manager, Matt Beard. The club released a statement expressing their deep shock and sadness, conveying heartfelt condolences to Matt’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Matt’s family and friends at this devastating time,” the statement read. “Matt was not only an extremely committed and successful manager, he was also a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone he worked with at the club.”
Beard originally joined LFC Women in 2012 and quickly built a formidable squad, leading them to back-to-back Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014. He also guided the Reds through their inaugural Champions League campaign.
After a stint with Boston Breakers in the USA, Beard spent two years with West Ham United Women, culminating in a Women’s FA Cup final appearance in 2019, before managing Bristol City Women. He returned to Liverpool in May 2021, tasked with rebuilding the team and returning them to the top tier of women’s football. He achieved this in his first season, winning the FA Women’s Championship and securing promotion to the WSL.
He parted ways with LFC Women in February, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to the club’s development and a collection of memorable moments. Tributes have been pouring in from across the football community, highlighting Beard's impact on the sport and the lives of those he worked with.
The club and its supporters remember Matt Beard not just as a manager, but as a respected figure who played a vital role in shaping the success of LFC Women. His passion, dedication, and warmth will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Matt.
