Tesla Under Fire: Children Trapped in Cars!
US safety regulators have launched an investigation into Tesla's electric door handles after receiving reports of children being trapped inside Model Y vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed they've received nine complaints regarding the 2021 Model Y, Tesla's popular model.
The alarming incidents involve the electric door handles malfunctioning, preventing occupants, especially children, from opening the doors. In four reported cases, desperate car owners had to break the windows to free those trapped inside.
NHTSA's preliminary review suggests the problem stems from insufficient voltage to the electric locks. Parents reporting the incidents stated they received no prior warnings about battery issues before the doors failed. While manual door releases exist, children may be unable to reach or operate them.
"Entrapment in a vehicle is particularly concerning in emergency situations, such as when children are entrapped in a hot vehicle," NHTSA stated. This investigation will encompass approximately 170,000 Model Y vehicles.
Tesla has yet to comment on the investigation, which could lead to a potential recall. This isn't Tesla's first run-in with NHTSA; the regulator is already examining complaints about the company's driver assistance systems.
This news comes as Tesla faces challenges with declining EV sales. Deliveries are expected to drop for the second year in a row as Elon Musk redirects the company's focus towards robotics.

- Electric door handles failing in Tesla Model Y vehicles.
- Children trapped inside due to malfunctioning doors.
- NHTSA investigation launched, potentially leading to a recall.
