South African MotoGP fans witnessed a thrilling weekend as Marc Marquez dominated the Aragon Grand Prix! The Ducati rider showcased his exceptional skill and speed, securing pole position with a record-breaking lap and ultimately winning the sprint race.
Marquez Breaks Lap Record, Clinches Pole Position
Marquez's dominance began in qualifying, where he shattered the Aragon circuit lap record with a blistering time of 1 minute 45.704 seconds. This secured his 99th career pole position and his fifth of the season. The session was a tense battle, with Marquez initially setting the pace before being challenged by his brother, Alex Marquez, and VR46 Racing's Franco Morbidelli. However, Marquez responded with an aggressive lap, demonstrating incredible control as his Ducati slid around the corners.
"The first lap with the first tyre was clean," Marquez explained. "I just did one lap and then I stopped because I was already (one minute and) 45.9 without exaggerating, but then I exaggerated too much (on my next attempt)." Despite admitting his riding style for the main race would be different, Marquez's pole position put him in a strong position for the weekend.
Sprint Race Victory for Marquez
Marquez capitalised on his pole position by winning Saturday's sprint race. He overcame a poor start to take the lead and ultimately secure victory ahead of his brother Alex and Fermin Aldegeur, completing an all-Spanish podium. This victory extended his championship lead over Alex to 27 points.
