Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the 19-year-old Orlando Pirates centre-back, is creating serious buzz! His mature performances for both the Buccaneers and Bafana Bafana have caught the eye of former Pirates defender Marshall Munetsi, now a Premier League midfielder for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
'Bucs Have Produced a Beast!'
Munetsi, speaking on Mike Morton Talks Football, lauded Pirates for nurturing such a talent. "That says a lot about Pirates because they always have a producing a beast, because everytime you see him play, that guy is very strong," he said, praising Mbokazi's physique, game reading, and spatial awareness. He added, "Pirates deserves (praise) for recruiting such quality young players. I was watching some game of him, he did very well, South Africa has real talent."
Ready for Europe?
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos believes Mbokazi is ready for a move to Europe, citing his physicality and composure. While Mbokazi stands at 1.8 meters, slightly below the average EPL defender height of 1.83 meters, his performances suggest he has what it takes. In the MTN8 semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns, he consistently made crucial clearances, racking up nine in the first leg and seven in the second. However, his interceptions could be an area for improvement.
Mbokazi's rise highlights the potential within South African football. Will he be the next Mzansi star to shine on the European stage? Only time will tell, but the early signs are incredibly promising!
