Get ready, KwaZulu-Natal! The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for a wet and potentially stormy weekend across most of the province. Forecasters predict a significant chance of rain and thunderstorms, so it's time to prepare.
What to Expect This Weekend
According to SAWS forecaster Thandiwe Gumede, Friday will bring partly cloudy conditions with rain expected across much of KZN. Saturday promises to be warmer but also wetter, with a 60% chance of rain and thundershowers across the province, and a 30% chance in the northern areas.
The big news: A yellow level two alert is in place for severe thunderstorms, potentially bringing excessive lightning, hail, strong damaging winds, and heavy downpours that could lead to localized flooding. This alert covers most of KZN, excluding the extreme northern regions.
Sunday will see partly cloudy conditions persist, with a 30% chance of rain across KZN and a 60% chance in the northern parts. There's even a slight chance of severe thunderstorms in northern KZN, although an alert hasn't been issued yet.
Prepare Now!
Given the potential for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms, now is the time to prepare. Here are a few tips:
- Clear your gutters and drainage systems to prevent flooding.
- Secure loose objects around your property that could be blown away by strong winds.
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid contact with metal objects.
- Monitor weather updates from SAWS and local news outlets.
Stay safe and dry this weekend, KZN!
