Tembisa Hospital Graft: Millions Frozen! What You Need To Know

The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has cracked down on corruption at Tembisa Hospital, freezing assets worth over 400 million rand belonging to individuals allegedly involved in fraudulent activities. This action follows a report initiated by the late Babita Deokaran, a whistle-blower who tragically lost her life after exposing suspected procurement irregularities at the hospital.

Massive Corruption Uncovered at Tembisa Hospital

The investigation, triggered by Deokaran's report, revealed potential large-scale corruption within the hospital's supply chain management. The National Treasury's Specialised Audit Services (SAS) unit conducted a thorough review of the hospital's accounting system and payment data, covering the period from April 2016 to August 2022. This review confirmed Deokaran's initial findings and uncovered a network of entities seemingly benefiting unlawfully from hospital contracts.

The Maumela and Mazibuko Syndicates

The AFU has secured preservation orders against two syndicates, the Maumela and Mazibuko syndicates, implicated in the Tembisa Hospital corruption. The frozen assets include luxury properties and vehicles, indicating the scale of the alleged illicit gains. The SAS unit identified 14 entities controlled by the Maumela syndicate that appeared to have irregularly benefited from contracts at the hospital.

  • Asset Freezing: Over 400 million rand in assets frozen.
  • Syndicates Involved: Maumela and Mazibuko syndicates.
  • Investigation Trigger: Report by assassinated whistle-blower Babita Deokaran.
  • Review Period: April 2016 to August 2022.

This move by the AFU signifies a significant step in combating corruption within South Africa's healthcare system and holding those responsible accountable for their actions. The investigation continues to uncover the full extent of the fraud and bring justice to those affected by it.
