Corinthians Dominate Athletico-PR! Copa do Brasil Semi-Finals Secured!

Corinthians have powered their way into the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil after a commanding 2-0 victory over Athletico-PR at the Neo Química Arena. This win, on top of their 1-0 victory in Paraná, sealed their place in the next stage of the competition.

Despite not being a sparkling performance, Corinthians completely controlled the match in Itaquera, rarely facing any serious threats from Athletico-PR. Early in the first half, Athletico-PR thought they had scored, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review spotted a foul by Kevin Viveros.

Just before half-time, Gui Negão dispossessed Filipinho, skillfully dribbled past Aguirre, and set up Garro, who calmly slotted the ball past Santos into an empty net, giving Corinthians the lead.

In a surprising move, Corinthians coach Dorival Júnior substituted Memphis Depay during stoppage time of the first half. According to Prime Video journalist André Hernan, the Dutch player felt some muscle discomfort and opted to avoid any risks.

The second half was filled with more drama, mainly due to controversial refereeing decisions. Athletico-PR players vehemently protested a penalty decision involving Viveros. Later, they demanded Vitinho be sent off for a tackle on Dudu Kogitzki.

Amidst the controversies, Corinthians extended their lead. Gui Negão showcased his striker's instinct, capitalizing on a scramble in the penalty box to score. Even more controversy arose when the referee initially called a handball on Matheuzinho just outside the box after a cross from Léo Derick. VAR reviewed the play, but the referee stood by his decision. However, Hugo Souza saved Benavídez's penalty attempt.

With their semi-final spot secured, Corinthians have also earned an additional R$ 9.9 million in prize money from the CBF. They now await the winner of the tie between Cruzeiro and Atlético-MG (Cruzeiro leading 2-0 after the first leg).
