Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari is set to feature for Rwanda in crucial World Cup qualifiers, bringing a much-needed boost to his career after a period of limited game time at club level. Ntwari, who hasn't seen official minutes for Chiefs in 10 months, is part of the Rwandan squad facing Nigeria in Uyo on Saturday, followed by a match against Zimbabwe at Orlando Stadium.
These matches hold significant interest for Bafana Bafana, who are in the same Group C and vying for World Cup qualification. A strong performance from Ntwari against Nigeria could indirectly benefit Bafana's chances. Rwanda currently sits second in Group C with eight points, behind Bafana's 13.
Adding to Ntwari's positive outlook, the Fédération Rwandaise de Football Association (FERWAFA) has pledged to settle outstanding debts to the squad, totaling approximately R921,000. This commitment, spearheaded by new president Fabrice Shema Ngoga, includes allowances and bonuses, providing further motivation for the Rwandan team. Ngoga has also promised better incentives for the squad moving forward.
Despite his lack of recent appearances for Chiefs, where Brandon Petersen has been the preferred choice, Ntwari has consistently represented Rwanda. His last game for Amakhosi was in November 2024. He'll be hoping to impress and potentially regain a starting position at Chiefs.
World Cup Qualification Hopes
The upcoming qualifiers are crucial for both Rwanda and Bafana Bafana. Nigeria is considered a major threat to Bafana's qualification hopes, so any points dropped by the Super Eagles will be welcomed by Hugo Broos and his team. All eyes will be on Ntwari as he aims to keep Nigeria at bay and boost Rwanda's chances, while simultaneously aiding Bafana's quest for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA/Canada/Mexico.
