Arsenal fans, rejoice! Beth Mead has reportedly turned down a significant offer from newly-promoted London City Lionesses to remain with the Gunners. This news comes as a huge boost for Arsenal as they prepare for the 2025/26 Women's Super League (WSL) season.
London City Lionesses' Ambitious Bid
The London City Lionesses, fresh off their Championship title win and promotion to the WSL, were keen to make a statement signing. Targeting Mead, a key player for both Arsenal and England, would have been a bold move for the club. The Lionesses are preparing to face Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, August 6th, in their debut WSL match.
Mead's Commitment to Arsenal
Despite the tempting offer, Mead has chosen to stay at Arsenal, demonstrating her commitment to the club she joined in 2017. The 30-year-old forward remains a vital figure in manager Renee Slegers’ squad. Mead played a key role in Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League triumph last season, further cementing her place in the team. Since joining Arsenal, Mead has scored 78 goals in 225 games, becoming one of the club’s most reliable forwards.
Her accomplishments extend beyond club football. Mead was a standout performer for England, scoring 37 goals in 74 appearances. She was part of the team that won Euro 2025 and two years earlier she lit up Euro 2022, finishing as both Golden Boot winner and Player of the Tournament.
Who's Leaving Arsenal?
While Mead stays, Arsenal will see the departure of long-serving midfielder Lia Walti. The Swiss international has joined Juventus after seven years in north London. Walti leaves behind a decorated spell with the Gunners, during which she lifted one Women’s Super League title, two League Cups and the Champions League. In total, Walti made 183 appearances for the club.
Arsenal fans will be hoping that Mead's decision to stay will propel the team to greater success in the upcoming season. The Gunners finished second in the WSL to Chelsea last season, and Mead is determined to help them knock the champions off their perch.
