Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has dropped a bombshell, opting for a 5-3 forwards-to-backs split on the bench for their highly anticipated Rugby Championship clash against the All Blacks at Eden Park. This deviates from the 'Bomb Squad' approach which has been a Springbok staple in recent years, particularly against New Zealand.
Why the Change?
Erasmus explained that the decision stemmed from analysing New Zealand's style of play. "New Zealand’s natural way is making it loose, making it fast, and that’s why we went with a 5-3 bench split," he said. The aim is to better counter the All Blacks' expansive game.
The Chosen Ones
The forward replacements are Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Boan Venter, Wilco Louw, Lood de Jager and Kwagga Smith. Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Ethan Hooker will provide backline cover. The inclusion of Hooker and Feinberg-Mngomezulu suggests a focus on pace and agility.
Erasmus acknowledged the potential for a tight, physical game, reminiscent of the World Cup final. However, he believes the 5-3 split is crucial to contain the All Blacks if they manage to open up the game. "But once they open you up, you struggle to contain them," he stated.
Le Roux Gets the Nod
Erasmus also addressed the selection of Willie le Roux at fullback ahead of Aphelele Fassi and Damian Willemse. He emphasized Fassi's recent opportunities and Willemse's experience as a double World Cup winner, stating that they know when to utilise Willemse.
Will this tactical shift pay off for the Springboks at Eden Park? Only time will tell. The match promises to be a fascinating battle of strategies and styles.
