The newly elected ANC Waterberg region chairperson, Jack Maeko, has strongly criticised Stanley Mathabatha's reasons for stepping aside as provincial chair. Maeko argues that Mathabatha unfairly used the Waterberg region as justification for his decision.
Mathabatha's letter to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula cited a desire to protect his reputation and integrity. He pointed to "unethical and ANC tendencies" linked to the Vhembe and Waterberg regional elective conferences.
"It can't be correct, comrades, that when you want to step aside, you give excuses about the conference of the Waterberg region. It can't be correct," Maeko stated emphatically. He further added, "It can't be correct that when you decide to step aside, you give excuses about the conference of Vhembe. You joined the ANC voluntarily; if you want to step aside, step aside voluntarily."
Maeko made these remarks during his closing address at the Waterberg regional conference in Bela Bela. He also voiced his support for Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba, advocating for her to succeed Mathabatha. Maeko highlighted the historical precedent of premiers also holding the position of ANC chairperson.
"Comrade Castle Mathale became the Premier, chairperson of the African National Congress. Comrade Chubu Mathabatha, premier, then chairperson of the province," Maeko pointed out. "And we are saying it must also apply to Comrade Dr Phophi Ramathuba. The agenda for women's emancipation is unstoppable."
Ramathuba, along with ANC Peter Mokaba regional chairperson and Polokwane Mayor John Mpe, are rumoured to be contenders for the leadership position. The race for the ANC Limpopo chair is shaping up to be a closely watched contest.
