Severe Storm Alert! KZN Braces for Hail, Strong Winds & Possible Tornado

KZN Weather Alert: Brace Yourselves for Wild Wednesday!

Get ready, KwaZulu-Natal! Wednesday is shaping up to be a day of sunshine and warmth, but don't let that fool you. Forecasters are warning of a high risk of severe thunderstorms hitting the metro area, starting from around 4 PM. The main threats? Large hail, damaging winds, and a slight possibility of a tornado.

Temperatures are expected to soar into the mid-80s (around 29°C) before the cold front arrives, bringing with it scattered showers and thunderstorms. The window of greatest risk is between 4 PM and 10 PM, so plan accordingly.

Safety First: What You Need to Know

Authorities are urging residents to take precautions:

  • Avoid travelling: If possible, stay off the roads during the peak of the storm. Parking under overpasses is dangerous and can cause traffic jams and accidents.
  • Stay indoors: If you're at home or in the office, stay away from windows. Straight-line winds can be just as damaging as small tornadoes.
  • Stay informed: Keep an eye on weather updates and warnings from reliable sources.

Looking Ahead: Cooler Temperatures and More Rain

The good news is that Thursday will be a much nicer day, with partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures. However, another cold front is expected to sweep through on Friday, bringing more cloud cover and a chance of rain showers.

The weekend is currently looking good, but it's always best to stay tuned to the latest forecasts. Be safe out there, KZN!

Wind conditions will be variable. Initially, South Westerly winds of 5-15 mph will shift to Northerly winds of 15-25 mph. Tonight, winds will be Northerly at 10-20 mph reducing to 5-15 mph.
