Sinner Dominates in US Open Opener!
Jannik Sinner has kicked off his US Open title defence in spectacular fashion, dismantling Czech player Vit Kopriva with a dominant 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 victory. The world number one needed just an hour and 38 minutes to secure his place in the second round at Flushing Meadows.
The Italian sensation showed no signs of the illness that forced him to retire from the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz last week. Speaking after the match, Sinner expressed his relief at being healthy and in top condition for the tournament. "I'm very happy that I'm healthy again and that we did our best to be in the best possible shape here," he said.
Kopriva, making his main-draw debut in New York, struggled to make an impact against Sinner's relentless power and precision. Sinner broke Kopriva's serve seven times during the match, demonstrating his dominance on the court.
Eyes on a Historic Repeat
Sinner is aiming to become the first man to win back-to-back US Open titles since Roger Federer's incredible run of five consecutive victories from 2004 to 2008. It's the longest streak without a successful men's title defence in the Open era, adding extra pressure and excitement to Sinner's campaign.
He’s already had an incredible year, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and reaching the French Open final. Can he add another Grand Slam title to his collection?
Sinner will face either Alexei Popyrin or Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. The world will be watching to see if he can maintain this form and continue his quest for US Open glory.
"I have amazing memories (from last year). Every year is different. You come here starting this tournament hopefully in the best possible way, which I did," Sinner added, reflecting on his return to Flushing Meadows as defending champion.
