Shikabala Drops Bombshell About Zamalek's 2016 CAF Champions League Loss to Sundowns
Former Zamalek SC captain, Mahmoud Abdel-Razek, popularly known as Shikabala, has made startling revelations regarding his team's defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2016 CAF Champions League final. The Egyptian giants succumbed to a 3-1 aggregate loss against the South African powerhouse, then coached by Pitso Mosimane.
Sundowns secured a dominant 3-0 victory in the first leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium. While Zamalek managed a 1-0 win in the return leg in Egypt, it wasn't enough to prevent Sundowns from claiming their first Champions League title.
Smoking Before the Match?!
Shikabala claims inappropriate behaviour contributed to the loss. According to reports, he stated, "Zamalek did not deserve to win the CAF Champions League title against Sundowns, because the circumstances, atmosphere, and players' behavior before the match were inappropriate."
The shocking claim continued: "Before the match against Sundowns, two players were smoking, even though the team roster at the time was only 14 players, and the circumstances were extremely difficult."
Future Aspirations for Zamalek
Despite the past disappointment, Shikabala hopes for a brighter future for Zamalek. "I hope Zamalek finishes second in the league this season, or wins the title, in order to return to participating in the CAF Champions League," he stated.
Shikabala, who recently retired at 39, enjoyed a decorated career but unfortunately never lifted the Champions League trophy with Zamalek, despite their five previous victories.
