Zamalek Legend SHOCKS: Smoking Scandal Cost Us Champions League!

A Zamalek legend has dropped a bombshell, revealing a shocking reason behind their 2016 CAF Champions League final loss to Mamelodi Sundowns. Mahmoud Abdelrazek Fadlallah, popularly known as Shikabala, claims inappropriate behaviour within the team contributed to their defeat.

Smoking Before the Big Game?

Shikabala revealed to Kooora that some players were smoking before the crucial match against Sundowns. He stated, "Zamalek did not deserve to win the CAF Champions League title against Sundowns, because the circumstances, atmosphere, and players' behavior before the match were inappropriate." He further elaborated, "Before the match against Sundowns, two players were smoking, even though the team roster at the time was only 14 players, and the circumstances were extremely difficult."

Sundowns' Dominance in 2016

Mamelodi Sundowns, then coached by Pitso Mosimane, secured a commanding 3-0 victory in the first leg at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. Although Zamalek managed a 1-0 win in the second leg in Egypt, it wasn't enough to overturn Sundowns' advantage. This victory marked Sundowns' first CAF Champions League title.

Zamalek, a powerhouse in African football with five Champions League titles and numerous domestic trophies, has struggled in recent years to replicate their past success. Shikabala hopes Zamalek can secure a top finish in the league to qualify for the CAF Champions League again.

Shikabala's Legacy

Shikabala, who retired last month at the age of 39, enjoyed a decorated career but unfortunately never won the Champions League with Zamalek. His revelation sheds light on the internal challenges the team faced during that fateful 2016 final.

  • Zamalek lost the 2016 CAF Champions League final to Mamelodi Sundowns.
  • Shikabala claims players smoking before the match contributed to the loss.
  • Sundowns won the first leg 3-0, securing their first Champions League title.
